Freedom

Sweet breath of freedom

Treasure of forgotten kings

A sacrifice of dreams

For anxious love stands on a watchtower

As crowns of anger

Press thorns of hate

Into the liberation of heaven

For your ripest fruit

Flourished on your choicest vine

Your chosen melody of love

Heralds each dance of hope

And with a tender heart

Your cherished affections

Are expressed

In an elevation of grace.

Therein lies the freedom one so desires. It is a ‘chosen melody of love’ to be extended to be enjoyed like dance of hope. Great lines Alan!

  2. “as crowns of anger press thorns of hate into the liberation of heaven” – such powerful words, Alan. I most love “the elevation of grace” in your poem’s closing lines.

Freedom is SUCH a treasure! It’s a pity it needs to be guarded so much. You capture that in a powerful image:
    “As crowns of anger
    Press thorns of hate
    Into the liberation of heaven”
But with freedom protected, the dance and grace is within reach. Thank you.

  4. Sumana Roy says:

“A sacrifice of dreams” is indeed the price of freedom…there are so many aspects of freedom in each line…the close is stellar….

  5. Panchali says:

Gracefully concluded!! It’s the longing we all crave ….alan! Brilliant.

  6. “anxious love stands on a watchtower as crowns of anger” ~ Wow! Beautiful. Loved the poem.

My favorite lines are the following:

    Your chosen melody of love
    Heralds each dance of hope

It is the song we hear that makes our heart sing and that is “freedom”

  8. Lowe says:

    “As crowns of anger

    Press thorns of hate”

Anger itself has probably kept many people prisoner.

  9. Mary says:

Hope and love go so very well with freedom.
Not sure about the anger though, but perhaps….
