The two moaning ladies
Beat me to the Asda checkout
I stood there and waited
Listening to all their gossip.

The one with the chicken, milk and processed cheese
Said ,“You know what
I’ve never been to America
Never wanted to.
My daughter took me to MacDonalds
Didn’t like the Apple pies.”

Her friend just laughed out loud
Fiddled with her tins of tuna
And said , “Well I’ve never been there
But I’ve been to Zanzibar
Golden beaches and camels
Didn’t like it, much too hot.”

I paid for my fruit and yogurts,
Buy one get one free,
The checkout lady rolled her eyes
And looked away.
A glance which said it all
And I understood.
The two murmuring ladies had been there before.
I could still hear them moaning.

I enjoyed this poem, Alan. It made me laugh really. I could picture you in this line.i have listened to people like this before when they don’t realize others are listening… I smiled about the one talking about apple pies at McDonalds…made me wonder if there are people who think they might not like England because they are not fond of fish and chips. LOL.
Fun read, made me smile.

This is funny Alan! But also a little bitter sweet when you think of the prejudice that may lie behind the clichés.
This totally made me laugh – I’m so with the checkout lady! Reminds me of a time a tourist in Tofino told me she had been “underwhelmed” with the Rocky Mountains. OMG.
