The two moaning ladies
Beat me to the Asda checkout
I stood there and waited
Listening to all their gossip.
————————-
The one with the chicken, milk and processed cheese
Said ,“You know what
I’ve never been to America
Never wanted to.
My daughter took me to MacDonalds
Didn’t like the Apple pies.”
——————–
Her friend just laughed out loud
Fiddled with her tins of tuna
And said , “Well I’ve never been there
But I’ve been to Zanzibar
Golden beaches and camels
Didn’t like it, much too hot.”
———————-
I paid for my fruit and yogurts,
Buy one get one free,
The checkout lady rolled her eyes
And looked away.
A glance which said it all
And I understood.
The two murmuring ladies had been there before.
I could still hear them moaning.

Written for Poetry Jam where Mary’s prompt was to write about –
Two or three things I know for sure, and one of them is the way you both hate and love something you are not sure you understand.
I enjoyed this poem, Alan. It made me laugh really. I could picture you in this line.i have listened to people like this before when they don’t realize others are listening… I smiled about the one talking about apple pies at McDonalds…made me wonder if there are people who think they might not like England because they are not fond of fish and chips. LOL.
Fun read, made me smile.
smiles. so true. it is alluring in that we really dont know it…then too in not really knowing it we can hate it for the wrong reasons….ignorance eh? smiles…
I really enjoyed this, Alan!
oh ho! I have been behind those ladies! Excellent! Have a happy day!
Ha! The things you can hear while waiting in long lines!
Alan! This is priceless … rolling my eyes with the checkout lady now.
This is funny Alan! But also a little bitter sweet when you think of the prejudice that may lie behind the clichés.
This totally made me laugh – I’m so with the checkout lady! Reminds me of a time a tourist in Tofino told me she had been “underwhelmed” with the Rocky Mountains. OMG.
What a clear description of this everyday scene. Made me smile too. Clever take on the prompt!
queue conversations can be very interesting, luv the way you crafted this poem
much love…
Supermarket conversations can be quite entertaining. I could visualise yours.
Alan, I am amazed that someone would judge America on McDonald’s apple pies! It’s so true though, its all in the perspective, excellent poem:-)
I liked this so true what one person will know and like the next will not know and not like
